Oh, the Decisions: How to choose a good carpet

There are likely as many different kinds of carpet flooring as there are types of people. Thus, choosing the right carpet for you can seem like an overwhelming task at first. Of course, at Braid Flooring & Window Fashions, our sales associates delight in being able to help you work through decisions of style, texture, and color, yet the most critical question you must ask is:"What do I like?" And we promise that we will never try and talk you into a product you don't like. To get you started, though, here are some broad questions you might want to ask yourself.

"What kind of durability do I need?"

The reality is that some rooms in your house have higher traffic than other rooms. Living rooms, dens, halls, and steps, for instance, tend to get more foot traffic than do bedrooms. In areas such as these, you might want to consider a Berber of a frieze. Berbers have a loop-pile design similar to that of a commercial carpet flooring, but with a taller loop; friezes are a twist-pile but with the fibers twisted together very tightly. In each case, the products are designed to withstand a lot of wear and tear.

"What kind of texture do I need?"

Some rugs, like the Berbers and friezes, have a great deal of texture to them. A traditional twist will still have some texture but will not have as much. If you want a velvety smooth carpet, a Saxony is something that you might like to consider.

"What color families do I want?"

Color affects the look and feel of a room. Lighter colors tend to make rooms look larger, while dark colors tend to make a room look smaller. Neutral colors allow you to match your carpet floors with any furniture you might place in the room. Bolder colors are used to complement furniture or trim or both. Darker colors in the browns and the scarlet families tend to give a more formal feel to the living space, while reds, blues, and greens can
add a more playful touch.

What other things should I consider?

One rule of thumb is that the denser the tufts, the richer your carpet floors will feel underfoot. It will also affect how long the flooring will take to show any matting or wear. Another consideration is the type of padding you use. If your budget is restricting you, choose a better pad and a step down on the rug's grade; that pad will serve you well.
